This contains a wealth of good information well written. It has a reputation as being the "Ferret Bible" and this is probably deserved. I won't go on about it's merits, i just want to note a couple odd omission: There is no unified list of basic supplies. You have to read each chapter and write your own. I'm not sure if this is a shortcoming or a design decision to keep people from 'cheating' But it is occasionally annoying when you just want to quickly refer to something like what kinds of litter are appropriate. There is also occasional vagueness, for example while food bowls and water bottles are mentioned you won't find any recommendation about what size to get. Nor in all the extensive material about diet could I find any mention of how much they do or should eat, either by weight, volume or calorie requirements.Good but not perfect. I hope someday they make a third edition.

She goes over several types of diets and the pros and cons. It gives a clear picture of what you need to decide on before you bring your new baby home. Everything from foods, toys, cages, first aid kits, she even covers common health issues to ferrets. In my opinion a must have for anyone new to ferrets.

This is such an amazing book for not only care, but for reference. It’s great to have on hand and answers so many questions. It really goes into depth but makes everything easy to understand. It also has recipes in it which is really nice. I love the fact that it goes into nutrition thoroughly and actually teaches you what is best for a ferret. Most books don’t go into detail about nutrition or give the wrong information. Highly recommend this book!

I knew practically nothing about ferrets when I purchased this book and by the time I was done reading it, I felt very informed and well educated about the animal in general and the animal as a pet. Well written in easy to understand language. I highly recommend it if you are considering getting a ferret as a pet. Comprehensive and even a little entertaining.

It's packed with helpful information for people that are totally unfamiliar with ferrets, I'd buy it again. I'd buy the ferret again too. Not at all what I was expecting. Genesis is the first book of Ken Lozito that I have read and I must say I was very impressed with his ability to tell a good story. From the first chapter I felt pulled into the story-line and found myself rooting for the characters as they set up Earth's first colony on an alien world. But Genesis isn't just a straight out book about a new colony, it also has a bent toward several mysteries. Chief among these mysteries is why their colony ship was detoured to another planet and there is something very hinky going on back on Earth. Filling out the book is some heart-stopping action, some rather terrifying alien creatures that are enough to give any weak-kneed readers nightmares (yep, here I actually mean me). Doubly looking forward to reading the next book :)

What a great beginning to the First Colony trilogy! This is the first time I've read works by Ken Lozito, but I have already acquired the next book...and I read Genesis over two days, stopping only to sleep. The story has it all, great characters, action, and believable world-building.I am especially fond of the protagonist Conner Gates. He is not a superhero or infallible, but his insights and intuition have been honed by his experience as a special operations leader. Finding himself unexpectedly on a colony mission, he is able to shift paradigms, adapt to the new surroundings, and utilize his skill set for new purposes, adding a much needed role to the colony.Lozito has populated the tale with many interesting characters, that are all-too-human, easy to relate to, and add layers of richness and complexity to the story. The plot progresses at a swift, but believable pace, with a short period of too-much-information in the training of a new patrol team. However, the author uses each character's strengths and weaknesses to craft a beguiling story, where the new planet is only a well-decorated stage for the players to perform.New Earth is naturally Earth-like, with water and a a breathable atmosphere. This makes sense; however, I do think there could have been more descriptive writing about the flora and fauna. Lozito populates the world with some ferocious predators, but doesn't give quite enough details to allow the reader to create a mental video and really "see" the story unfold.For this reason, I would give the story 4.5 stars.It's a great read though--so don't hesitate to buy.

I bought this because I badly wanted to read a first-colony type novel, but this is really more of a military sci-fi novel using a first-colony-settlement for background. Apparently mil-SF is the author's specialty and that is what he writes regardless of the backdrop and setting.Having said that, it's not bad. Many interesting mysteries are set up to investigate, presumably for later exposition in the subsequent books... just bear in mind that they're primarily approached from a mil-SF perspective more than an exploration/discovery/wonder perspective. And that there's a lot of needlessly mil-spec diversions (like boot camp) that are heavily overdone. Characters are sketched in with broad primary strokes but rarely in any depth.Oh, and I could have done without the diatribe against religion in the middle, but at least it was brief.On the whole I'm still debating whether to get the next book in the series.

Genesis - First Colony Book 1 by Ken Lozito is a wonderful story about a Special Forces operative who finds himself being blamed for the death of several million civilians. Even though he was innocent, no one would believe him.A close friend finds a way to put him and his team into 'stasis' aboard a colony ship without his knowledge, along with 300,000 other colonists, enroute to a new earth-lime planet 60 light years from Earth.When he arrives, its difficult for him to believe that this isn't just a ploy to interrogate him by the criminal Syndicate that actually killed the mass of people, but he's been in stasis for over 200 years. Everyone he knew on Earth is now dead or extremely old.As he adapts to life on New Earth, he faces different and more difficult challenges with the local wildlife and other colonists. It's a very good story.The character development and the world building are top notch in this character driven military SciFi epic. Exodus is the first of four novels set in this new colony world. It went by very quickly and I was totally absorbed ftom start to finish.Lozito knows how to build a story, set an amazing pace then makes you care about the main characters. It's all anyone needs in a great novel. I can't wait to start on book 2. First, I have to catch up on my beauty sleep!

This is a well written book based upon a fascinating premise. The characters are interesting and their interactions well done. There are some interesting sub-plots. The alien life is well developed, though I look forward to see if more is to come in this area. The tragedy at home is partially developed but that is understandable since it clearly plays a subsequent role. All the makings of a worthwhile series. Well done.

Deep dark military training comes in handy for Connor helping a colony to survive unsuspected intelligence and provocation of alien native life on the new planet. Story starts out a little dry, then becomes a story that grabs you and won't let go. Great storytelling mix of military, colony life and setting up a new organization structure to handle survival challenges. Book 2 please.

I wish I'd found this book sooner! I started seeing a therapist because I knew something was wrong with me, I just couldn't figure out what it was. She suggested that my mother might have BPD and that I do a little research on the subject. I found this book and read the first half in one night. I read a few pages, cried, read a few more pages, cried some more. Apparently everything "wrong" with me is a completely normal reaction to being raised by a mother with BPD. I'm still sorting through all the pain, guilt and trauma of spending the last 35 years convinced that I was the problem, but I have hope for the first time ever. With the help of this book and a therapist I believe I can build some self-esteem, find some confidence and start fully living for the first time ever. I'm really grateful.

My personality disordered parents who are completely lacking in insight and judgement into their mental illness and abusive behaviors forced me into counseling at the age of 14 because they felt my justified anger that I used to defend myself against my mom’s daily three hour rage attacks on me was pathological. All of these 25 counselors and 6 psychiatrists in 30 years in the system never once asked me about my family dynamic so put me on antidepressants to control my behavior which caused mania that they treated with antipsychotics that induced psychosis within one month and I earned the label of bipolar 1 with psychoses which required CBT and I kept trying to redirect them to the psychological abuse I was enduring as an adult since birth but ALL of them said my parents were the one reacting to my pathological behavior from being bipolar and they would treat me better if I acted better because they weren’t mentally ill so I had to be the one who was abusive. Nobody identified the abuse, validated me, would let me express my pain and anger because they were convinced there was no environmental cause for it. I’ve been in therapy with a counselor for a year and a half who has actually let me try to piece together the little I remember of my whole past due to dissociative amnesia and validated my parents are abusive and the bipolar and psychosis were medication induced, but as good as she has been, she wasn’t able to give me the details of why my parents act like they do and the beliefs and behaviors and JUSTIFIED rage there abuse caused in me nor these precious exercises that treat the EXACT issues I struggle with. $11.99 to identify and fix what $50,000 and 30 years in the mental health system didn’t even come close to identifying much less treat appropriately. This book is a God send and I am so grateful to be able to let go of the blame and my past, get well and finally get on with my life with complete confidence in my perception that everyone has tried to make me believe is inaccurate. What a gift!

Cannot tell you how comforting this book was to read about my mother. I'm in my forties and still have a horrid relationship with her. But reading this book was like the author wrote it about my actual mother. She was textbook borderline and after 20 years of shrinks, one suggested I read this to see how much rang true. I finally realized it wasn't me with the problem. My real problem was having a mother who had all of these confusing traits and it to be undiagnosed and untreated. The classic sign of the Borderline person as it's never their fault and to project their problems on the closest people around them, usually me. A Borderline person is someone with no boundaries and no respect for anyone else's. However, it's more than that, they are incapable and this gave me comfort. She isn't being disrespectful or ignoring my space, this book explained she's incapable. It's like giving an instruction in Italian to someone who speaks English. They might pick up a little from your hand gestures, but they didn't really get it and therefore will not implement a thing. Being normal to their child for a Borderline is impossible, they don't understand and this book showed me she never will.

Found out my mother shows all the signs of BPD a couple months ago. I'm 40. I've realized that her mental illness has warped my entire life. I'm about halfway through this book and I'm tearing through it. The amount of gasps and outbreaks of tears in just a few hours has been rather epic. I already feel validated and less lonely, and I've managed to batter back the depression that was creeping up on me today because of it. I've also been reading the book by Randi Kreger, who wrote the foreword to this book. It's also been very helpful, though more for how to manage my interactions with my mother. This is actually helping with the healing process.
