Rob Miller makes a compelling case for Ruby as an elegant and productive text processor. The text leaves me convinced this was probably one of Matz's top design goals for the language. Ruby is absolutely a cleaned-up, sane Perl.I like that Rob carefully places Ruby in relation to UNIX coreutils and demonstrates many organic CLI workflows, with each tool used appropriately. I also appreciate, due to the very lightweight and readable Ruby syntax, the gentle introduction to parsers and NLP. This could provide the newcomer a conceptual foundation before venturing into more industrial strength tools (in Scala, Java, Python, Go, what-have-you).Rob is a talented writer and I look forward to more from him. One "star" subtracted due to a formatting snafu in my edition that is not representative of the normal high quality of this publisher.

The goals of the content in this book were very good. My only complaint is that the editors seem to have fallen asleep after the first half. Starting around Chapter 10 (Writing Parsers) the quality takes a massive nosedive, which is unfortunate, because this is where it starts getting deep. At times the code and text are out of sync, as if a code snippet was updated without also checking the text. It makes it difficult to know when you are not understanding something vs. poor editing.

For me, because I work with both Ruby and text, this book is indispensable. However, even if you only need to mess around with JSON or regular expressions in Ruby, this book is still absolutely worth it, because it's better-written and more descriptive than most web tutorials you'll find,

A fun book, with all sorts of useful tricks even experienced Ruby Programmers might not know. Serves as a great and quick reference to being more efficient with Ruby's vast Text Processing capabilities.

Manipulating text is one area where Ruby excels, and this book really plays to that advantage. The author states that any text processing script can be broken into three stages: first you get the text, then you apply some kind of transformation to it, then output the results. I like the way that the book is organised into three parts that go into great detail on each of these three stages.Part 1, Aquiring text, starts with the basics: reading from files or from standard input. And quickly moves on to how to extract data from CSV files, and scraping data from HTML files using the Nokogiri library.Part 2, Modifying and Manipulating Text, opens with an introduction to regular expressions (does every programming book have a chapter on regex?). Then it gets really meaty with a chapter on writing parsers, and another on natural language processing. I particularly enjoyed the section where the author demonstrates how to use the Parslet library to parse a Rich Text Format file.Part 3, Writing Text, starts again with the basics: writing to standard output, standard error, and to a file. Then it goes on to discuss serialising data to JSON, XML, or CSV formats. And the last chapter uses ERB to render templates into text files. Anyone who knows rails will be familiar with the ERB templating language, but I found it refreshing to see this used outside of a rails context.If you want to learn Ruby as your first programming language, this is not the first book that you should read on Ruby, but it would be a good choice as your second book. Or if you already know how to program and you want to add Ruby to your repertoire, then this would be a great place to start. I've been working with Ruby for 8 years and I picked up lots of new stuff. I wish I could have read this book years ago!

I've recently browsed around and found this book. Yesterday I was with my open relationship partner (I don't really have a name for it and that's ok with me) and I told her we were going to experiment today. This book will seriously change your sex life. My boyfriend and I decided to get into something exciting and "out there" after Nicole Daedone's revolutionary "slow sex" technique left our sexual experience rather unfulfilled. "The Heart of Tantric Sex" was a recommendation of my meditation teacher and was exactly what we were looking for! My boyfriend and I have both come to agree that our sexual experience before this book was not sex but mere mechanical attempts at the idea lol. Of course, I think without meditation practice in tandem the book would not be sinking in as smoothly, especially in the practice of being "spiritually and physically in the moment" during foreplay and beyond. An iPhone app like Simple Habit or Gaiam's Meditation could be a great asset to get together with this book to get the full spectrum of colors out of it.

I have another book called Teach Yourself Tantric Sex that is good and deals some of the core of the topic but then goes into technique, kind of like a manual. This book backs it up and expands on the foundations of the topic and how the physical, emotional, and subconscious interacts play into sex. Im currently rereading the the highlight sections and it gives me a new perspect of what real love making is compared to what we have been told in western culture. A great start to the journey....

Very rarely a book can take subject of Tantric Sex to a completely different level, outstanding on a market flooded with superficial publications, selling promises only. This book is a real deal. I would like to thank the author for writing it with such a devotion, generosity and authenticity.

I'm only three chapters in, so I'll come back and write a final review once I'm actually finished. BUT so far, this book is so so so so so so helpful to me personally. It's difficult for me to relax when my husband and I "do the dirty", because I stress myself to no end that I won't be able to reach orgasm "quickly enough" or that it won't be a "perfect" one. Diana Richardson is helping me SO much to "relearn" how to make love to my husband and thoroughly enjoy the act again by focusing my entire energetic being on the here and now instead of rushing it and causing "friction" (not a good kind, lol) the whole time. Don't let the possibly "new age"ish vibe of what you think you know about Tantra turn you away! The way she explains it is so relatable and makes more and more sense the more I read. Like...it's already making such a huge (and welcomed) difference in the way I approach sex itself in general. Even though I'm only 40ish pages in right now, I wanted to come here and recommend this book to anyone struggling with the same or similar frustrating issues that I've had for years in the bedroom. Also, it's a very easy-to-read style of writing, so I'm sure I'll be done with it in no time. Until then, farewell. x] I hope you find what you're looking for.P.S. I cannot say for sure yet whether this book would be particularly helpful to same-sex partners. While she does not at all appear averse to it, there is a lot of talk about the opposite polarity and balance between "male and female". I'll know more once I'm done! If you've read this far into my review, I hope it was helpful to you in some way at least.

This book has changed my life. It helps connect the dots with sex, in a way we can grow from it and do it in a beautiful way that heals each other vs abusing each other for unconscious selfish needs. Once you start practicing tantra, it will take over the old ways and habits of sex.

PrefaceThe Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments of 1986 are the most sweeping legislative changes in the history of the public water supply field and will have more of an impact than the original act passed over two decades ago. These legislative changes reflect a perception by Congress that there is a great amount of public anxiety over the quality of our drinking water, as well as frustration with the manner in which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) enforced the requirements of the original act. Practicing engineers and utility managers who are involved with the planning, design, and operation of water treatment plants must begin to evaluate current options and anticipate what lies ahead. At the present time, many programs in civil and environmental engineering at numerous universities are offering courses in the area of water treatment plant design.Several excellent books have been written in recent years that present theory and principles of water treatment processes. The authors have observed during their years of experience in the water treatment field that no publication has been devoted entirely to water works engineering planning, design, and operation. The intent of the authors in developing this book is twofold: first, to consolidate the developments in design of water works engineering that have evolved as a result of technological advancement in the field and of the concepts and policies promulgated by the environmental laws and the subsequent guidelines; second, to develop step-by-step procedures for planning, design, and operation of a medium-size conventional water treatment plant.This book has a total of nineteen chapters and four appendices. Chapters 1 through 4 are devoted to the basic facts of water engineering. Current and future trends in water treatment technology, water quality constituents, design factors, drinking water regulations, unit operations and processes, process combinations, and process trains are discussed in detail.Chapter 5 is devoted to preparation of a predesign report. The general purpose of a predesign engineering report and an example of a model predesign report for a medium-size water supply project are presented. In this predesign report, procedures are presented for (1) estimation of population, water demand, plant capacity, and raw water quality; (2) evaluation and selection of a treatment process train; (3) coordination with distribution system; and (4) estimation of costs for proposed capital improvement project.The remainder of the book is devoted to the design of the medium-size water treatment facility for which the predesign report is developed in Chapter 5. Step-by-step design calculations; equipment details; engineering drawings, plans, and specifications; and operation and maintenance of head works, raw water transport, treatment, and distribution systems: all are presented. These systems include raw water intake, screening, pump station, transport pipeline, flow measurement, rapid mix, flocculation, clarification, filtration, color, taste and odor control, disinfection, distribution, and residuals handling and disposal. Also, separate chapters have been devoted to plant layout, yard piping and hydraulics, instrumentation and automatic controls, design summary, and the avoidance of design errors. A separate chapter (Chapter 18) is provided to cover nonconventional treatment processes. In this chapter, the treatment processes for nitrate and fluoride removal, ion exchange, reverse osmosis, and heavy metals and organics removal are briefly presented.The design procedures given in this book are for illustration and general information only and are not intended to be used as standard for water treatment plant designs. References made in this publication to specific methods, processes, and equipment do not constitute or imply an endorsement or recommendation. Equivalent or improved equipment may be obtained from many other manufacturers not mentioned in this publication.This book will serve the needs of students, teachers, consulting engineers, equipment manufacturers, and technical personnel in city, state, and federal organizations who must review designs and specifications. In order to maximize the usefulness of this book, the material has been presented in a simplified and concise format. Many tables have been developed using a variety of sources. Those tables provide information used extensively in water treatment plant design. The reason is very simple. Covering design procedures for these processes would take another book of equal size. The authors strongly believe that the planning and design principles developed in this book can easily be extended to the design of many other treatment processes for a new plant or the upgrading of an existing facility. Therefore, the in-depth coverage and step-by-step design procedure for an entire conventional water treatment plant is the strongest feature of this publication.This book is intended for a design course in water works engineering. Most of the programs in civil and environmental engineering are offering such courses at graduate and undergraduate levels. The material is developed in such a way that the normal prerequisites (fluid mechanics and an introductory course in water supply and wastewater treatment) would be sufficient. Furthermore, the basic material contained in this book can be covered in a three-semester credit course.In this country, because the old plants will be upgraded in the future, the U.S. customary units will continue to be in use for some time to come. Decent book for water design. It has a long design example that continues into each chapter. Tons of information that is still relevant today even though this book was printed in 2000. However, it's in desperate need of an update. There are a ton of typos that you're left wondering how could they have missed them. That's not even the worst part. The binding on the paperback is horrible. DO NOT purchase the paperback. I used this book no more than a dozen times and it has split in half. Pages are all over the place. To use this book I would have to take it to FedEx/UPS to get this professionally bound. Look for the hardcover version if you really want this book.

Why did the post office not drop my package home? I had to struggle before I get an opened package! The book has a poor quality, I've lost many pages within one month of use.

The binding of the book is cheap and terrible. Within the first week of using the book, pages were falling out. I eventually took it to fedex and had professionally bound.

I think that this book is really really good for those involved in water supply and water treatment especially environmental and civil engineers. All the concepts are there. Many books focus mainly on the theory, but this book is very useful for practical and application purposes. I think only the 2000 edition of S Kuwamura's book "Integrated Design and Operation of Water Treatment Facilities" comes close to matching the usefullness of this book for engineers dealing with water treatment design. I say this book is definetely worth buying, and for me, who is an environmental engineer dealing with water treatment, this book has come in so handy, that I always keep it in the office. It is really good to see a great book being published which comes in so handy to engineers when designing.

Till the arrival of this book, there have been five books commonly used by consulting engineers for the design of water treatment plants. Water and Wastewater Engineering by Fair/Geyer/Okun (1968), Water Treatment Plant Design by Sanks (1978), Water Treatment Principles and Design by James M. Montgomey, Inc.(1985), Integrated Design of Water Treatment Facilities by S. Kawamura (1991), and Water Treatment Plant Design by AWWA/ASCE (1998). As evident from the dates of publication of above mentioned books, most of them are 10-20 years old except for last one. Some of the above books needs a companion book in order to fully understand theory behind unit processes in environmental engineering. Another drawback with some design books is that they do not provide step-by-step procedure for planning, design, and operation of water treatment plant.Water Works Engineering by Qasim, Motley, and Zhu has a total of nineteen chapters, and four appendices. Chapter 1 through 4 are devoted to the some fundamentals of water engineering. Chapter 5 deals with the preparation of a predesign report. The remainder of the book is devoted to the design of medium-size water treatment plant. It covers step-by-step design calculations; equipment details; engineering drawings; and operation and maintenance of head works, raw water transport, treatment, and distribution systems. Separate chapters have been devoted to plant layout, yard piping and hydraulics, instrumentation and automatic controls, design summary, and the avoidance of design errors.Inclusion of more detailed description of laboartory tests for predesign studies would have been better. The book does not talk much about the the commonly used softwares in water works.Overall, this book is an excellent manual for design engineers in water industry. Its step-by-step procedures for the design of water treatment plants and its in-depth coverage for the entire conventional water treatment plant is the strongest feature of this publication.

About the Author
Christopher Hitchens was born April 13, 1949, in England and graduated from Balliol College at Oxford University. The father of three children, he was the author of more than twenty books and pamphlets, including collections of essays, criticism, and reportage. His book God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything was a finalist for the 2007 National Book Award and an international bestseller. His bestselling memoir, Hitch-22, was a finalist for the 2010 National Book Critics Circle Award for autobiography. His 2011 bestselling omnibus of selected essays, Arguably, was named by The New York Times as one of the ten best books of the year. A visiting professor of liberal studies at the New School in New York City, he was also the I.F. Stone professor at the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley. He was a columnist, literary critic, and contributing editor at Vanity Fair, The Atlantic, Slate, The Times Literary Supplement, The Nation, New Statesman, World Affairs, and Free Inquiry, among other publications. He died in Houston on December 15, 2011. The following year, Yoko Ono awarded him the Lennon-Ono Grant for Peace.
